Telecom Turning Point: Connecting America and Building What Comes Next

FBA's Fiber for Breakfast series celebrated its 300th episode this week, at a time when BEAD is finally moving into deployment. But even as states begin putting shovels in the ground, the broadband conversation is already getting bigger. Connecting every location still matters, but so does making sure the infrastructure built today can support what comes next.

Gary sat down with Arielle Roth, Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information Administrator, NTIA, to discuss where BEAD stands, what still needs to be finished, and how broadband fits into a much broader technology landscape that now includes AI, next-generation wireless networks, data centers, and other emerging applications.

Roth said NTIA sees communications infrastructure as an important piece of U.S. technology leadership. That includes broadband deployment, additional spectrum for wireless networks, and participation in global technology standards.

Growing demand also raises a practical question: will there be enough fiber available to support BEAD while data center construction and other infrastructure projects are competing for the same supply? Roth said NTIA is monitoring the domestic fiber supply chain closely and has received assurances from major manufacturers that enough capacity will be available to keep BEAD projects moving.

Permitting remains another piece of the equation. Roth asked providers to continue sharing what they are experiencing on the ground, saying those challenges affect not only how quickly BEAD networks can be constructed, but the pace of the broader infrastructure buildout needed for emerging technologies.

That is where the conversation comes full circle. BEAD’s immediate mission is still universal broadband, and Roth was clear that the cleanup round comes first. NTIA’s own guidance continues to place deployment, monitoring, and completion of BEAD-funded networks at the center of the program.

But completing BEAD will not end the infrastructure conversation. The networks going into the ground now will connect data centers, support AI applications, and serve technologies that may not yet exist. The job today is to connect everyone. The opportunity is to make sure the infrastructure we build to do that is ready for what comes next.

👏First BEAD Fiber Connections in Louisiana👏

This week, Louisiana announced Coushatta is the first community in the nation to receive fiber internet service through the federal BEAD program and SkyRider Communications is the first provider in the nation to begin BEAD fiber construction. FBA issued the following statement:

“...As deployment accelerates nationwide, millions more Americans across the country will gain access to the reliable connectivity needed to support education, healthcare, economic opportunity, and participation in an increasingly digital economy. These first connections are just the beginning of the lasting impact fiber infrastructure will have on communities nationwide.

“FBA and our members have been proud to work alongside state and federal partners throughout this process. We look forward to continued progress as more projects move into construction, more networks come online, and more communities gain access to reliable fiber broadband.”
