The Predictability Imperative: How AI is Helping Fiber Providers Compete in an Uncertain Market

On this week’s Fiber for Breakfast, Gary sat down with Michael Weening, CEO of Calix, to discuss how AI is improving the way fiber providers service customers, grow revenue, and manage the business.

Real value comes when providers can apply AI to the workflows providers already run every day: customer support, field service, churn prevention, upsell opportunities, network health, marketing, and subscriber experience. They are the daily operating realities that determine whether a provider can grow efficiently and compete effectively. But the conversation also included important caution. AI can create risk if it is not managed correctly. Weening emphasized three requirements: trusted, secure, and predictable.

Gary noted a broader challenge facing the industry is that providers are being asked to participate in an AI-driven economy shaped by hyperscalers, large platforms, and fast-moving technology companies. But the opportunity for fiber providers is not to copy those companies; it is to use AI in ways that make their own businesses stronger.

The broader takeaway is that AI’s value for fiber providers will not come from chasing every possible use case. It will come from applying intelligence to the right workflows in a way that is secure, manageable, and tied to real outcomes.
